According to Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, the Ontario government's investment in the public school system has increased 24 per cent to about $9,821 per student since the Liberals took office almost five years ago.
More than $16 million in additional dollars is being promised to bolster programs for students at-risk of failing high school.
Other public education system investments include:
• $10 million for English as a Second Language in the 2008/2009 school year
• $67 million for special needs students in the 2008/2009 school year
• $32 million over three years for the Student Nutrition Program
• $2 million in 2008/2009 for Parenting and Family Literacy Centres
• $10 million in 2008/2009 to help students receive a well-rounded education through arts, music, physical education and other outdoor education programs
• $3 million in 2008/2009 to ensure environmental education and awareness is a part of lessons and school operations.
The children of visitors to Canada will have to pay the usual cost to taxpayers of the public education expenses. Most Ontario school boards will be charging 10,000 dollars and up depending on administration expenses and local costs.
Many school boards welcome citizens from other countries to attend Ontario public schools as it is a source of funding for the public schools and helps create jobs in the Canadian education industry.
The good news is that for every 6 foreign students that attend a Canadian public school - one education job is created and 2 service jobs. The bad news is that for every student that is falsly represented as a Canadian and put into the very expensive public school system the taxpayers have $10,000 stolen from them.
